Tree Wrapping Guide: Strand Counts, Spacing and Cost

How many feet of lights a tree actually takes, the spacing that separates professional wraps from spirals, and what it costs.
Estimating strand length
Multiply the trunk circumference in feet by the number of wraps per foot of height, then multiply by trunk height. A 6-foot-circumference trunk wrapped every 3 inches needs about 24 feet of light per foot of height — 10 feet of trunk is roughly 240 feet of strand before branches.
Spacing is everything
Inconsistent spacing is why DIY wraps look like a candy cane. Hold a steady pitch on the trunk, then widen gradually as branch diameter drops so density looks even to the eye from the street rather than measured on the bark.
Trunk, limb or full canopy
Trunk-only wraps are the budget option and read well on rows of street trees. Trunk-and-primary-limb is the sweet spot for most front-yard specimens. Full canopy wraps are dramatic and expensive, and best reserved for one focal tree.
Protecting the tree
Never wrap tightly enough to indent the bark, and always remove strands each season. Left on year-round, strands girdle growing limbs and damage the tree permanently.
